It’s a truism that people who have lived abroad for a long time return to find that both they and their home countries have changed. When I moved back to the United States after 20 years in Europe, I experienced impatience, frustration, a sense of loss, but also wonder, affection, and sometimes even relief. I also discovered a new perspective on everything from business to social issues, parenting to urban planning, which comes out in discussions with new and old friends on both sides of the Atlantic.
